A long time ago . . .

It Started in 1942

Over 80 years ago, John Mitchell purchased a local pharmacy on 1st Street in Vulcan. This was the beginning of a new era he got his start serving the community as a Pharmacist after giving up the reins of his former career as a Rancher.

John David Mitchell eventually married Virginia, a pharmacist educated at the University of Alberta, and together they worked actively in the community at the Pharmacy and the Hospital in town.

By 1974, the business had moved to a new location and Vera Mitchell donated the historic pharmacy building to Heritage Park in Calgary, where it was converted to an ice cream parlor.

The Next Generation . . .

New Beginnings in 1987

Our family began work on the Market Street Vulcan grocery store 35 years ago, at the location which used to be an old General Motors dealership in town.

It took many months, but construction was finally completed, interior was finished, shelves were stocked, and the Grand Opening of Market Street Vulcan was on May 11, 1988. At this time, we were known as First Street Foods.

35 years later, we have expanded the building and updated the look, but at its core, Market Street has always been about serving the community. We are proud to have been part of Vulcan all these years and look forward to many more to come!

Years of Service . . .

Community

You may be able to spot some familiar faces who are still working at Market Street today (Linda and Cathy). Linda started as a grocery helper and is now the Store Manager, while Cathy started as an assistant meat cutter and is now the Meat Section Manager.

In addition to having long-time employees rooted in the community, we’ve seen the next generation come through our ranks, with sons and daughters of previous Market Street Vulcan employees getting their careers started with us as well.

Over 35 years at Market Street, we’ve seen faces change and come and go and it has been an honor and a privilege to be there for our employees, our customers, and our community!
